Low sodium canned soups can make mealtime quick and easy if you know which soups to look for. Here are several low sodium canned soup options to add to your pantry.
Canned soup is a convenient meal. You can enjoy vegetables and protein all in one bowl, and there’s not much easier than popping open a can for a complete meal. If you’re living a low sodium lifestyle, choose your canned soups carefully because most are extremely high in sodium. Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup, an old favorite, contains 890 mg of sodium in one-half cup.
Even soups labeled ‘reduced’ or ‘lower’ sodium can be off-limits for those on a low sodium diet. Progresso’s Reduced Sodium Creamy Tomato Basil Soup contains 490 mg of sodium in a 1-cup serving, 1040 mg per can. If your daily sodium limit is 1500 mg, one cup of soup would be one-third of your daily allowance.
If your local grocery store is not carrying low sodium soups or other low sodium foods, speak to the manager and request the specific products you need. They may order these items and add them to their shelves if enough requests are made.

Hi Danielle.
These soups are all still too high in Na. I completely avoid soups. Finding something to eat is a challenge with Low Sodium (1500) and Low Potassium (2000) due to Potassium sparing diuretics. With heart failure we are all trying to find something to eat that does not impact fluid retention and weight gain. Thanks for all your wonderful suggestions. I am trying to get weight down but it is up and down everyday. Usual same diet (Ugh!) every day and need to find some variety.
Hi, Florence! I hope this site will help you find some foods and recipes you can safely enjoy!
I found a Tomato soup, very tasty, just heat and eat, at Trader Joe’s, 105 mg sodium per 1 cup. It comes in a carton, and I keep several in the pantry . It is really tasty! There are 2 ‘flavors’.
I love to read this!! I’ll look for this next time I’m at Trader Joe’s! Thanks!
I was happy to find Campbell’s Unsalted Tomato Soup at my local grocery store. The label says per 1/2 cup serving: 90 calories, 50 MG sodium. They also carry Cream of Chicken and Cream of Mushroom Unsalted.
I live in a rural area so I was pleasantly surprised to find soup that fits my low sodium life.
I use these. I pour a can of the coc over chicken thighs and bake in oven. Use Morton salt free at table. The cot is good to use to make your own spaghetti sauce and com makes a good gravy replacement. Use Ms dash to season.
