When you think of herbs and spices, the last thing that probably comes to mind is salt. After all, spices are supposed to be the key to adding flavor naturally, right? Surprisingly, not all spices and seasoning blends are as low in sodium as you might expect. In fact, some popular spice mixes and rubs are packed with hidden salt, which can quickly add up if you’re trying to maintain a low sodium diet.

This can be disheartening if you’re carefully managing your sodium intake, but don’t worry—there are plenty of flavorful options available that keep the salt low enough to bear the low sodium label. (In order to be labeled low sodium, foods have to contain no more than 140 mg sodium per serving.) The good news is that with a little know-how, you can find a variety of low sodium seasoning blends that still deliver bold, satisfying flavors.

Keep in mind that most spices and seasonings consider ¼ teaspoon a serving. If you’re adding more than that make sure you include that amount in your sodium count.

During my low sodium journey, I’ve uncovered several delicious options that allow you to enjoy your favorite dishes without the worry of hidden or excess sodium. Whether you’re looking to spice up your cooking routine or need alternatives to your usual go-to spices, these low sodium seasonings will help you savor every bite without the extra salt.

Low Sodium Seasoning Blends FAQs

These are labeled low sodium. Doesn’t that mean they should contain no sodium?

No. There is a difference between low sodium and no sodium. According to the FDA, foods labeled no sodium contain less than 5 mg sodium per serving. Low Sodium foods contain 140 mg or less sodium per serving.

Where can I buy low sodium seasonings?

Check your local grocery stores. The low sodium seasonings should be on shelves with the standard seasonings. Check the labels because not all seasonings that are low in sodium are labeled as such. Other retailers like Target and Walmart also carry low sodium seasonings. If you’re open to ordering online, Amazon carries dozens of low sodium brands.

How do I use low sodium seasonings?

Use your low sodium seasonings the same way you would regular seasonings. I often add more of the low salt versions for a fuller flavor. The more you use them the better you’ll be able to season your food specifically to your liking.
